Thirty-five percent of the world's illiterate people live in India. Despite recent economic growth India still faces an incredible lack of basic resources for many of its people. Although schooling is free and compulsory from 6-14 years of age, infrastructure is inadequate and often totally lacking. Approximately 40% of students, mostly girls, drop out by secondary school. Without a dramatic shift in addressing this situation, it is estimated that by the year 2020, over 50% of the illiterate population globally will live in India. The lack of overall educational infrastructure, including library resources, only exacerbates this problem.
Room to Read seeks to work in disadvantaged schools and communities in India where libraries are virtually nonexistent.
Room to Read, in collaboration with Bonnie's Big Idea, seeks to transform the lives of children in India and to provide them with the quality educational resources they so need and deserve. We hope you will join us in our efforts to turn today's readers into tomorrow's leaders.

We want to ensure every child has access to a high-quality education, with appropriate grade-level texts, a library budding with books, and a safe classroom with teachers helping them resist pressure to drop out for work or marriage. We're creating world change that helps historically low-income communities break the cycle of poverty by improving literacy rates and ensuring students get one step closer to graduation day and the lives they choose for themselves.
