My Kilimanjaro and Room to Read Fundraiser
With schools reopening, after being closed due to COVID19, low-income families are hit hardest. A UN policy brief on the impact of COVID-19 on women says, “Evidence from past epidemics shows that adolescent girls are at particular risk of drop out and not returning to school even after the crisis is over.”
With this crisis, girls are at particular risk of losing not only their educations, but their childhoods. We know that with school closures, girls, especially in low-income communities, are at higher risk of early marriage, gender-based violence, child pregnancy, and exploitation.
That is why Anjali and I are setting energy in motion again to raise funds for girl education!
Three years ago, we were unable to climb Kilimanjaro due to covid and instead ‘climbed’ it at home in 3 months and completed the equivalent number of steps (39,600 steps). Thanks to your support over the past few years, we have raised over USD 10K and aim to raise more funds to support girl education this year!
This year we are trekking Mt Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, Africa along with our trekking friends. Please contribute to our fundraiser for Room To Read an organization that is working with girls in low-income families to help them with stay connected with local, trained female mentors, peer support groups and early warning systems to detect risk and help them get through this time and continue their studies.
All funds will go directly to Room to Read, a global non-profit working to ensure children in low-income countries grow up with effective teachers, high quality children's books, and essential life skills to escape the cycle of poverty through quality education. Your support helps us reach our goal and gives you the opportunity to make a difference.
Here is How You Can Help
Donate to Room To Read’s Girl Education program at our Fund Raising page here and make a difference in a girl’s life.
$10 brings 10 new books to a classroom.
$25 fills an entire bookshelf.
$50 teaches a child how to read for one year.
$100 gives one girl a year of confidence-building life skills education.
$300 keeps her in secondary school with a supportive mentor for an entire year.
By focusing on literacy and gender equality in education, Room to Read transforms the lives of millions of children in low-income communities. Working in collaboration with local communities, partner organizations and governments, they help primary school children develop literacy skills and a habit of reading, and support girls to complete secondary school with the relevant life skills to succeed in school and beyond.
Your donation to my page will be an investment in children’s futures. Thank you for your support!
With your help
We want to ensure every child has access to a high-quality education, with appropriate grade-level texts, a library budding with books, and a safe classroom with teachers helping them resist pressure to drop out for work or marriage. We're creating world change that helps historically low-income communities break the cycle of poverty by improving literacy rates and ensuring students get one step closer to graduation day and the lives they choose for themselves.
